What SB 617 changed

Senate Bill 617 was signed on 1 October 2025 and applies to Cal-WARN notices issued on or after 1 January 2026, regardless of when the employer began planning the reduction. It adds disclosure requirements to the notice itself; it does not change who must file.

RequirementWhat the notice must now contain
Service coordinationA statement of whether the employer plans to coordinate services through the Local Workforce Development Board, through a different entity, or not at all. Where the employer elects to coordinate, that coordination is to occur within 30 days of the notice date.
Local board contactA functioning email address and telephone number for the local board, together with a standard description of the assistance available through America's Job Center of California locations.
CalFresh informationA description of the CalFresh food assistance programme, its benefits helpline, and a link to the programme website.
Unchanged. Cal-WARN's coverage threshold and its 60-day notice period are not altered by SB 617. Cal-WARN continues to reach employers below the federal WARN Act's threshold, which is why California filings frequently have no federal counterpart.
